Garden at Selasih Manor

Why Selasih Manor

What the house offers that others do not

Not every advantage of a boarding house fits onto a features list. Some of it has to do with the age of the building, or the consistency of the staff, or simply how a place feels after the first week.

Overview

Six things the Manor does well

Stated without decoration. Each of these reflects something guests have mentioned returning to, rather than something written for a brochure.

A building with age

Colonial-era construction, restored rather than rebuilt. The proportions of the rooms, the timber floors, and the ceiling heights are not things that can be added to a newer building.

Same staff, years on

The caretaker, the cook, and the maintenance man have each been at the house for more than ten years. Returning guests find the same people, which makes a difference for longer stays.

Location on a quiet street

Jalan Mahameru is close to the city centre without being in it. The street is residential in character; the house is not beside a main road or a construction site.

Maintenance handled without fuss

Any building problem reported by a guest is seen to within a working day. Guests are not left to chase a management company or raise a ticket with an absent landlord.

Outdoor space that is actually usable

The verandah, the cottage terrace, and the grounds are shaded and maintained. In a city where private outdoor space at this price range is unusual, it is worth noting plainly.

Breakfast that is actually breakfast

The East Room rate includes a sit-down breakfast in the dining room each morning — prepared by the house cook from what is in the kitchen. Not a packet of cornflakes and a kettle.

Expertise

Managed by people who know the house

The property has been under continuous management by the same team since it opened in 2010. That period of consistent attention means that the people running the house understand its particular character — where the old joinery needs watching in the wet season, which rooms catch the wind, what the kitchen garden produces at each time of year.

This is not something a recently-opened short-let apartment can offer. The house staff are not rotating through a shift roster; they are people with a long-term relationship to the property.

Caretaker in residence most mornings

All staff have been at the property over ten years

Maintenance carried out by someone who knows the building

No third-party property management company involved

Reliable fibre broadband throughout the house

Writing desks in each room — not decorative ones

Kitchen in the South Wing Apartment for independent use

Working library accessible to East Room guests

Practical provision

Suited to working visits

Each room is set up for someone who has work to do. The broadband is reliable. The desks are of reasonable size and positioned near a window. The common areas are quiet during working hours. The house is not a party house and does not attract guests who treat it as one.

Academics, translators, researchers, and writers have all stayed at the Manor and found the conditions workable. That consistency of use has reinforced the character of the house.

Service quality

Clear communication and no unexpected charges

Rates are stated plainly on this site. The deposit required to hold a booking is communicated before any commitment is made. There are no check-out cleaning fees added afterwards, no service charges applied on departure, and no charges for amenities that are described as included.

Enquiries are answered within one working day. If the house cannot accommodate a request, we say so directly rather than leaving an enquiry unanswered.

Cancellation policy explained before booking is confirmed

Direct communication with the caretaker, not a call centre

What sets the Manor apart

Things that are specific to this house

The Garden Cottage is genuinely separate

A freestanding structure at the rear of the property. Writers and researchers who have stayed there describe the quiet as unlike anything a main-building room can offer. The terrace looks onto a working kitchen garden, not a car park.

The south verandah catches the late afternoon

The South Wing Apartment opens onto a verandah shaded by the frangipani in the early afternoon and open to the late light. There is nowhere to add a verandah to a serviced apartment; either the building has one or it does not.

A minimum stay that suits longer visits

The house is not structured for one-night stays. The minimum periods — a fortnight for the Apartment, a week for the Cottage, three nights for the East Room — mean the house retains a settled character. Guests who need somewhere steady for several weeks find this a practical fit.

No online booking platform — direct enquiry only

Bookings are confirmed directly with the caretaker. There is no automated system, no instant-book function, and no platform commission passed on to guests. The process is slower than a click, but it means both parties can establish whether the stay is a good fit before any deposit is made.
